For more than 10,000 years humans and dogs have benefited from each others company. I think most people accept that the risks involved in having dogs in our community are acceptable compared to the benefits (much like road transport).

Unfortunately we're never going to prevent all:

* dogbite injuries
* child abuse
* rape
* suicide
* medical accidents
* serious road accidents
* workplace bullying
* tripping injuries
* drug overdoses
* the list goes on...

The best that we can do is attempt to minimize risks using rational approaches. Breed Specific Legislation is not a rational approach for various reasons already covered in these posts.

I wish it could work like that, but then it'd be too late! Some people are just selfish morons and aren't likely to be deterred by after-the-fact punishment.

You have brought up the same issues I have when I have written my letter to the government. Lets see what they come back with, I expect it to be weak. I have also asked for verification of the breed for each of the dogs pictured, to the same standards they have outlined in their document MINUS option D. For good reason.

Well said Mike.
Its good to know a scary Pit Bull can be lurking anywhere with their any coloured eyes, nose and fur!!!

A pit bull is a mix of breeds, so there is no accurate way, save DNA testing, that they can say with absolute certainty that something is a pit bull!

What a joke....a poor attempt to appease the hysteric masses. Are they doing the same for mastiff's because the last dog attack was a mastiff x?? What about that labrador that ate its owners face?? Or the malamute x that killed a child a couple of years ago.

When Police have broken up dog fighting rings....full of 'vicious' pit bulls...they have often remarked in their paperwork how the dogs, even dogs so severely injured and in pain, would wag their tails and lick their rescuers hands...and these are fighting dogs, not family pets!

Punish the morons who think they do not need to supervise their dogs, the morons who think their dog is special and doesn't need to be socialised, and the morons who think sticking a dog in a backyard and visiting it once a day to feed it is being a good owner!!

Punish the deed, not the breed!
